A&M’s Spain Tax Team takes a truly holistic approach to the market, offering expertise across a diverse range of services—from Indirect Tax Services to Global Transaction Tax, Private Equity Funds Tax Compliance, People Services, Corporate Tax, Tax Compliance Services, Operating Model, and Transfer Pricing.

The Role:

Indirect Tax has evolved into one of the most complex areas of taxation, presenting significant challenges as tax authorities leverage an ever-expanding toolbox of legal rules and formal conditions. Drawing upon our extensive expertise in Spain and wider EU-VAT matters, we ensure that our clients’ VAT positions align with the highest standards.

We are seeking an experienced Indirect Tax Director to lead and further develop the indirect tax area in Spain. This is a senior leadership role within our growing tax team, with a primary focus on leading complex transactions (M&A, restructuring, etc.) and advising clients on strategic indirect tax solutions.

As the Indirect Tax Director, you will be responsible for overseeing the VAT strategy for high-value transactions, leading the indirect tax department, and developing new business opportunities. You will work closely with businesses to optimize their indirect tax processes, drive innovation in tax solutions, and play a key role in high-level transaction planning. Additionally, you will defend clients’ interests during interactions with tax authorities, such as during audits, and provide compliance support.

This position offers significant leadership opportunities and a chance to be part of one of the fastest-growing tax practices globally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Indirect Tax team in Spain, ensuring that we provide world-class advice on all indirect tax matters, including VAT optimization in complex transactions.
  • Take the lead on indirect tax aspects of M&A, corporate restructuring,  and reorganizations and other high-stakes transactions, including the assessment of VAT DD issues, ensuring the tax position aligns with both business objectives and legal requirements.
  • Provide advanced analysis and strategic advice on complex indirect tax issues, developing actionable, practical solutions for clients.
  • Oversee indirect tax audit preparations and appeals, working closely with clients and tax authorities to ensure favorable outcomes.
  • Lead international indirect tax projects, coordinating with cross-border teams to address global VAT implications in large-scale transactions.
  • Work on projects aimed at improving indirect tax compliance, efficiency, and risk management for clients.
  • Stay up-to-date on regulatory changes and evolving indirect tax requirements, ensuring clients remain compliant with the latest tax laws.
  • Lead and mentor junior team members, fostering the development of the next generation of indirect tax professionals.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to identify new business development opportunities and contribute to the growth of the indirect tax practice in Spain and internationally.

Ideal Qualifications:

  • At least 9-10 years of experience working in top-tier firms such as Big4 or renowned law firms, with a proven track record in handling high-value transactions and complex indirect tax matters.
  • Solid experience in leading complex indirect tax projects, including those related to transactions such as M&A, restructuring, and corporate reorganizations.
  • In-depth understanding of VAT and indirect tax concepts, including their practical application in high-level transactions and compliance matters.  Working knowledge of customs and excise duties as well as special indirect levies will be valued.
  • Strong leadership capabilities, with experience in managing and mentoring teams.
  • A client-focused, entrepreneurial mindset, with a proven ability to build and grow relationships and contribute to business development.
  • Excellent communication skills in both Spanish and English, with the ability to present complex issues clearly to clients and internal stakeholders.
  • A background in Economics, Finance, Law, or a comparable field.
